Retinitis Pigmentosa Treatment

Retinitis Pigmentosa is known as an inherited eye disease that causes retinal degeneration, leading to a slow progressive loss of vision. It’s the first blindness cause of genetic origin for adults. It’s first symptoms usually take place in childhood or adolescence and the disease advances slowly and gradually within the years.

Although there has been continuous progress in knowledge about this disease, effective treatments to restore vision have not been achieved. However, at the Centro Internacional de Retinosis Pigmentaria “Camilo Cienfuegos” in Havana, an alternative treatment, that consists of performing a technical surgery combining other therapies has been developed for more than 20 years. Althrough, this treatment does not eliminate the disease, it has managed to stop the progress of Retinosis Pigmentosa in hundreds of patients, avoiding blindness.

The Cuban therapy for the treatment of Retinitis Pigmentosa consists on the combination of the following procedures:
